West & Central Aprons

Acting as Principle Contractors, the works were constructed over four phases, each consisting of 400m2 and taking not more than six days to construct. Programming was critical to the successful delivery of the works in order to accommodate Airline activities and timetables. As experienced Airport contractors, Thomas Bow City Asphalt were proactive in ensuring all staff obtained relevant security passes, including site specific H&S training in order to ensure unhampered airside access within the airport.

The delivery phase commenced with full depth saw cutting of existing bays to release pressure from adjacent bays, followed by the use of three 18 tonne wheeled excavators with breaker attachments in order to fracture the concrete. Exchanging breakers for buckets, concrete spoil was loaded into waiting tipper lorries for removal to off-site recycling facility. Preparation works included the application of bitumen to exposed faces of concrete bays, prior to the installation of reinforcing fabric and final reinstatement of Apron with Chronolia rapid setting concrete. Areas were made available to aircraft movements within just 48 hours.
